Abstract:

BACKGROUND: Glucosamine hydrochloride in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis has been confirmed for its safety and reliability due to the function of inflammation control, repairing cartilage and improving joint function. However, glucosamine hydrochloride drugs combined with non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for low back pain are rarely reported.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of glucosamine hydrochloride combined with NSAID for facet joint degeneration and low back pain.
METHODS: A total of 35 patients with degenerative facet joints and low back pain were recruited and received oral administration of glucosamine hydrochloride 750 mg, twice a day, plus diclofenac sodium tablets 75 mg, once a day. The treatment lasted for 8 weeks. Oswestry disability index, visual analog score and SF-36 were used for evaluation prior to treatment, immdiately after treatment and 8 weeks after treatment.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Thirty-three patients completed the final follow-up. The male to female ratio was 1:2, and mean age was (41.2±10.3) years. After treatment, low back pain and leg pain symptoms, lumbar function and quality of life were significantly improved (P < 0.05). Glucosamine hydrochloride combined with low dose NSAID had its effectiveness for degenerative facet joints and low back pain.
